If you’re dreaming of swimming through gravy rivers on mountains of perfectly whipped mashed potatoes, all balanced delicately on an overflowing plate of Thanksgiving food, then hey, what’s up? You’re my people.

But beyond eating mashed potatoes, what is there to say? You might think the tuber is about as dull as you can get, but you would be mistaken; with a simple spud, you can commit murder, tell time, and remove wrinkles and fine lines.

You can also dazzle your dinner guests with these six fascinatingly weird facts about potatoes.

Potato is a rust killer.

Potato contains a chemical called oxalic acid, one of the main ingredients in rust and tarnish removers, which means that you can use a potato as a pretty rugged cleaning agent. Not bad!

To get your silver polished without any elbow grease, try this:

  1. Boil a few potatoes in water until the potatoes are super mushy and the water is cloudy.
  2. Remove the potatoes but keep the cloudy water; let cool to room temperature.
  3. Drop your tarnished silverware in the cloudy water and let it sit for an hour or two.
  4. Remove silver from water, wipe clean.
