Please Stop Reading Crap Writing Advice on Medium

I have a theory that if we can get everyone on Medium to stop clicking on the crap writing advice then it will finally stop choking up my newsfeed.

Here’s the thing about writing. You will not become famous or rich doing this type of work. At least, not overnight, anyway. Yes, you can improve your writing and networking skills relatively quickly. And sure, you can land some marvelous publishing opportunities that allow you to grow a wonderfully supportive readership who will share your work on social media. But no, you’re not going to go gangbuster viral or earn five grand from a single post because Chad and Karen won’t shut up about their one-time success.

The only writing advice you need is the type that will serve your long-term goals. Unless of course, your goal is only to go viral and make several figures off a single post. Then please, by all means, keep reading the never-ending stream of crap writing advice.

Here is some unflashy, unsexy, very solid writing advice that will serve you well if you are looking to develop your craft.

  1. Follow writers and authors whose work makes you feel inspired to push your writing skills.
  2. Know your weaknesses and commit to working on them.
  3. Learn how to grow a thick skin when it comes to critiques. Also, know the difference between an asshole comment and constructive criticism.
  4. Read. Read. Read. Read. Then read some more.
